Palliative care relieves the physical symptoms and supports the psychosocial needs of people with a serious illness (WHO, 2020). Similar to rehabilitation care goals, the aim of palliative care is to help people live as well as possible. Palliative care can be delivered by occupational therapists anywhere in the healthcare system.
Occupational therapists are providing a palliative approach to care when they improve quality of life, provide interventions, identify unmet needs, anticipate and support declining function and safety needs of clients living with serious illness. Occupational therapists help people maintain dignity and comfort while they experience functional decline. This webinar aims to empower and equip occupational therapists with the knowledge, resources and education needed to deliver palliative care with their clients.
After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe the palliative care approach
- Be familiar with resources and tools to assist in practice with providing palliative care
- Understand the value of the occupational therapy role in providing interdisciplinary competency-based palliative care
