Self-stigma, chronic pain, and the role of the occupational therapist (October 29, 2024)

Recorded On: 10/29/2024

Presented by: Christine Davis

Clients who experience chronic pain may experience self-stigma, which can negatively impact their health (Scott et al., 2019). The experience of self-stigma may limit participation in valued occupations. Occupational therapists must address the stigma experienced by clients with chronic pain to maximize their participation in necessary and desired occupations. This webinar will provide occupational therapists with an overview of self-stigma and explore the impact stigma can have on clients who experience chronic pain. Pain neuroscience education will be discussed when utilized in practice alongside other evidence-based interventions to improve occupational performance and potentially reduce self-stigma for clients with chronic pain. Clinical scenarios will be discussed to provide clear examples of how occupational therapists can implement strategies in practice.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Define self-stigma and identify how self-stigma may impact clients experiencing chronic pain.
  2. Apply strategies to reduce the impact of self-stigma to enhance occupational performance.
