Suicide prevention is a critical concern for Canadian occupational therapists (OTs), given that approximately 4,500 Canadians die by suicide annually—about 12 individuals each day (Government of Canada, 2024). OTs often work with populations at elevated risk, including those with mental health challenges, chronic illnesses, and disabilities. By integrating suicide prevention strategies into their practice, OTs can play a pivotal role in identifying risk factors, providing support, and promoting resilience among vulnerable clients.
This webinar will explore suicide prevention in occupational therapy, focusing on risk factors, warning signs, and intervention strategies. You will learn the OT’s role in suicide prevention, evidence-based tools, and therapeutic approaches to foster resilience. The session covers navigating sensitive conversations, integrating trauma-informed care, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. It also addresses ethical considerations, professional boundaries, and self-care, empowering OTs to support clients while maintaining their well-being.
After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Recognize risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors related to suicide in occupational therapy practice.
- Understand the OT’s role in suicide prevention, including evidence-based assessment tools and intervention strategies.
- Apply trauma-informed and client-centered approaches to support individuals at risk while maintaining professional boundaries and self-care.
