What time is this for me?

Trauma is a fact of life and a reality for many of our clients. Whether you are working in a school or in a clinic working with school-aged children, understanding the impacts of trauma on a developing brain is imperative. “Developmental trauma is [a] set of complex difficulties affecting a child’s sensory systems, dissociative responses, attachment, capacity for regulation, identity and cognitive abilities” (Beacon House Psychological Services Ltd, 2020). Childhood trauma can have a significant effect on school performance (e.g., Jiminez et al., 2016) and limit occupational participation in education, social participation, and play. While a child may be referred to you for sensory needs, feeding, attention, social skills or a number of other reasons, if an underlying trauma has not been addressed, our work will not be effective. “Occupation therapists have an imperative to understand trauma in its many forms and its effects on occupations (Edgelow et al., 2019), and an obligation to create safe spaces that avoid retraumatizing the people who use their services” (Restall & Egan, 2021, p. 224).

This workshop is designed to offer occupational therapy professionals an opportunity to better understand the impact of trauma in children and be able to provide trauma-informed services to children in school settings. An overview of trauma, attachment, the sensitivity of the nervous system, trauma triggers and trauma re-enactments will be provided. Participants will review the impact of trauma on occupational participation in schools and how to re-frame the behaviour of children to understand their needs through the lens of trauma. Participants will then explore the occupational therapist’s role in providing trauma-informed care in schools through window of tolerance, relationship, safe environment, stress management and organizational strategies. This workshop will provide participants a renewed sense of confidence when working with children and their families living with the detrimental effects of trauma.
